Serenje Orphans Appeal

                     VOLUNTEERING (including 'GAP YEAR' students)

From 2010, the 'Serenje Orphans Childrens Home' will be able to offer placements at the orphanage for approved volunteers for periods of up to 2 months at a time. We are hoping to be able to have a continual volunteer presence at the site throughout the year so that the children benefit most by this. Our ideal situation would be to have small groups of Volunteers (2 to 4) at any one time.

Here is a comment from a volunteer, Megan Gladwell, who spent 2 months at the orphanage: 'Thank you so much for the greatest experience. I really cant tell you how grateful I am that you gave me this amazing opportunity. I learned and experienced so much. I had the best time. I got along so well with the kids as well as the people. Everybody was so lovely and made me feel right at home. I walked away with a big smile on my face, truly happy with my experience. I do however miss it and it was very hard to say goodbye. But hopefully sometime in the future I could come back and visit.'

This opportunity is available for school-leavers seeking part of a Gap Year break from formal study, university students (e.g. Occupational Therapists requiring work placements as part of their course), and others (of any age including retirees) who wish to offer their expertises to our project.

Approved volunteers will be met at Lusaka Airport on their arrival in Zambia, transferred to a Guesthouse in Lusaka, and then assisted in their travel to Serenje (some 500km from Lusaka). They will be accommodated at a local guesthouse close to the orphanage site in Serenje. Meals are prepared from local produce by the cook, and will ensure a healthy diet. Support will also be close at hand since the Managing Director, Kamandete Chuma and his wife Leah will also be living in the house.

To apply now for a 2 month period at the orphanage, please email an application to providing the following:

1) a letter of application outlining your experience, skills and reasons for wishing to work in Zambia

2) your Resume, with your contact details and that of 2 personal referees

3) your preferred dates for the placement
